While attributed to Thanksgiving episodes of the television show Friends, the term Friendsgiving was first noticed making the rounds of the internet in 2007. Originally a Thanksgiving where those who couldn’t afford to go to the annual family gathering celebrated the holiday with local friends, it has morphed into its own day, celebrated by some the day before or after Thanksgiving, by others sometime in the month of November. Friends and even family attend, and the rules governing it are far looser than traditional Turkey Day.
What’s truly notable about Friendsgiving is Thanksgiving Day has become Thanksgiving season. While it hasn’t replaced the national holiday, it has taken root as a time for friends during the holidays.
Do We Have A Card For That?
While there are Friendsgiving cards, Happy Thanksgiving cards are still acceptable and appreciated when given on the new holiday. Thanksgiving greeting cards on Friendsgiving recognize the foundation of the day and what the celebration is really about; being thankful for the friendships that make life worth living.
Well, How Many Cards Then?
Multiple cards are certainly not expected during the season, but Happy Thanksgiving cards on both days would not be too much if you are attending a Friendsgiving dinner and wanted to give your friends a Thanksgiving card on that fourth Thursday too. But maybe reserve that Friendsgiving card for a dinner you attend or had to decline, or for a very special friend you wanted to let know you were thinking of them.
Exchanging Happy Thanksgiving cards on Friendsgiving can be part of the event, almost like a Christmas gift exchange. That means you shouldn’t forget funny holiday cards for Friendsgiving. Vegetarian Friendsgiving? A thank you from a grateful turkey would do well. A confused Pilgrim, or someone disoriented because they have no idea who to argue with at the dinner. An amusing exchange at at the event can set the tone for an enjoyable evening.
They say friends are the family you choose, and, the month of November has gone from Halloween clean up and family dinner, to a seasonal month for celebrating love, togetherness, and family of all kinds.
